A Balcony List

Small things matter.  They magnify in ways we never imagine.  They reverberate.  Penetrating every thought.  Piercing the soul.  Forming opinions, actions, attitudes.  Concentric circles reaching far beyond that one moment.

We can choose what kind of circles we send forth.  Will our words, our actions be a tiny splinter that nags and aches?  Will they be words and deeds of life as those around us inch along in their journey, perhaps struggling slowly in making progress?   Do we stand- on the balcony, from the stands, on the sideline, in the audience- cheering, waving our banners for others?

I started, slowly, a balcony list.  Each child has a page, seeds which I hope will grow into enormous, glorious, flowering trees.  Each sweet deed, thoughtful comment, funny line is recorded.  To share.  To cheer them on.  To remind them Whose they are.  To reverberate into the lives of those they touch- those balconies where they stand and cheer.

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. ~Hebrews 10:24

The term "balcony" comes from a book I read in college (many, many years ago), Balcony People by Joyce Landorf Heatherly.

  1. I love this! What a fantastic idea. Raising up children to cheer on those around them - I'm thinking this is one of those Important things.

  2. I really wish I had started sooner with all the ones I love. My parents were amazing at keeping a running verbal balcony list with us. Once I moved away, they would write letters of nothing but encouragement for me.
